Description:

Aksu, Woman's Matrimonial Dress, Province of Arque, Dept. of Cochabamba, Early/Mid 19th C. Natural dyes. This large piece is an excellent example of the dyeing, fine spinning, and precise weaving skills of women. The aksu gained prominence during the Inca Period (1430 CE - 1532 CE). Traditionally, the garment was wrapped around the body, belted, and fastened at the shoulders with a decorative pin called a topo. However, the Spanish deemed the garment too revealing and imposed the tailored wool dress of Spanish Iberian peasants on native women. As a result, women began wearing their aksus as an overskirt. The finest ceremonial aksus, such as this one, were worn as part of matrimonial attire. Made in two pieces, the colorful bottom half features a rainbow of horizontal stripes and patterned weaves, while the top half showcases wide minimalist bands of plied three-color yarns in red, grey, and brown, bordered by four red stripes. A thin yellow line splits the primary design band, referencing the chaupi, or meeting ground, of the Hanan and Hurin moieties of the tribe. Size: 3'10" x 4'8".
