Description:

Anglo-Indian Portrait, Circle of Francesco Renaldi (British, 1755-1798) "Mughal Lady Seated In an Interior," oil painting on unstretched canvas. Unframed. Size: 40'' x 29'' (102 x 74 cm). In 1786, Renaldi petitioned the East India Company for passage to Bengal as a portrait painter. He arrived in Calcutta, where he quickly secured British patronage and established himself producing both formal portraits and more intimate "conversation pieces." Renaldi's Indian oeuvre is particularly notable for its cross-cultural subject matter. His works depict not only British sitters but also Indian women—often in domestic or allegorical contexts—and occasionally interracial groupings, offering rare visual documentation of social interaction in late 18th-century colonial India. Between 1786 and 1796, he traveled extensively across Bengal, including Dhaka and Murshidabad, before moving upriver. By 1792–93, he had arrived in Lucknow, likely influenced by the success there of artists such as Johan Zoffany, Ozias Humphry, and Charles Smith. Renaldi returned to Calcutta around 1795, after which his documented activity diminishes.
