Description:

Aymara Ccahua Ponchito, Jesus de Machaca, Dept. of La Paz, 18th C. Size: 2'8'' x 4'0'' (81 x 122 cm). The Machacas, just south of Lake Titicaca, once formed part of the Pacasa Aymara nation. They still herd the same high quality alpaca, so coveted by the Inca. This one-piece ponchito features a bichrome chimi ground, of pink and dark burgundy yarns. The weave is so tight that it could probably hold water. The fineness of the spin and the regularity of the weave probably means that the chimi speckled ground was achieved through the warping process rather than twisted yarns. The neck opening is achieved by discontinuous wefts that turn back on themselves. The wide center ground is bordered by two wide red bands dissected by four narrow reverse spun lloq'e stripes which protect the wearer from evil spirits. In this case, the ponchito was probably worn by an indigenous lay person belonging to a Catholic cofradia, a secular cult that venerated a Saint and financially sponsored its procession during the Corpus (Christi). These weavings are related in style to the ccahua ponchitos of Calamarka, found just south of the Machacas. This piece is finished by a teal-colored woven tubular edge. Consigned by a major figure who has held these in collection since acquiring them in the field circa 1979.
