Description:

Aymara Challapata Style Poncho, Achiri, Pacajes Region, Dept. of La Paz, Early 19th C. Size: 5'0'' x 4'8'' (152 x 142 cm). Alpaca warp and weft with natural dyes. Classic Challapata (Aymara: Place of Offering or Ritual) poncho. The Inca called the southern quadrant of their empire Tawantinsuyu, the Collasuyu, or the Aymara region. They coveted the alpaca herds of the Pacasa Aymara. The Pacasa used the leaves of the shinus molle, Peruvian Pepper tree, to achieve the jet-black dye, used in their textiles that were renowned throughout the South/Central Andes. This piece features six wide bands of colored stripes on a Pacasa black ground. Because of the high content of lanolin in the alpaca there is a sheen across the entire surface of the textile. Five lloq'e reverse spun stripes protecting the wearer are featured at the weft selvedge. Completing the piece is a narrow two- color complementary warp band of scroll and bird figures, and a band of muti-colored fringe. The exquisite multi -colored stripes reflect the dyeing prowess of the Aymara women. Consigned by a major figure who has held these in collection since acquiring them in the field circa 1979.
