Description:

Aymara Poncho, Dept. of Cochabamba, 17th/18th C. Wool. An early, rare and lovely poncho made by a master weaver who composed a complex work of symmetrical elements inside of other symmetries using more than 10 natural dye baths to orchestrate a resounding work of textile art. Modeled on the Jesuit ponchos of the mission priesthood, and reflecting the ancient striped tunics of the pre-Hispanic period, this two panel creation with different sized halves, was hand spun and woven on an indigenous loom while the more common Jesuit ponchos were made as identical woven strips on European treadle looms and then assembled into ponchos. The termination areas are small and well concealed while the center area is a serial repeat of solar symbols referencing Inti, god of the Incas. The separately woven fringe is well worn as to be expected of a garment centuries old but overall the textile, while lightly soiled, is without serious stain, discoloration or damage. There are no rewoven areas. A real masterpiece among ponchos. Size: 4'9'' x 4'10'' (145 x 147 cm).
