Description:

Aymara Woman's Ahuayo, La Paz, Dept. of La Paz, 16th C. Size: 3'9'' x 3'8'' (114 x 112 cm). Alpaca warp with metallic silver thread in the complementary warp weave areas, alpaca weft. Natural dyes. This extremely fine and exquisitely dyed heirloom textile came out of a private collection of an indigenous family in the city of La Paz. It was possibly made in Jesus de Machaca which was then part of the Pacasa Aymara tribe. The Pacasa were renowned for their herds of alpaca which were coveted by the Inca. The making of this silver treasure has a history beyond the Machacas. Between 1500 and 1650 it is estimated that between 16,500 and 25,000 tons of silver, were shipped to Spain from South American mines, the majority of it coming from Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain) in the boom town of Potosi. The silver of Cerro Rico not only transformed Europe, but it conquered the world. The entire focus of Spanish colonial occupation transferred from Lima and Cuzco in Peru to Sucre and Potosi in Bolivia. By the end of the 16th Century the city that grew up around the base of Cerro Rico-Potosi was larger and wealthier than both London and Madrid. In Bolivia, even native families became wealthy. Native Aymara women wore silver threaded mantles as a sign of status. The eight lloq'e reverse spun stripes at each weft selvedge protected the wearer from malevolent spirits. The supplementary warp structures featured in the patterned bands of the mantle, especially the small vertical square motif, are found in pre-Columbian Cabuzas textiles found in Arica Chile, and Post Conquest Aymara textiles. Also, the purple center field, pampa, the adjacent red stripes, and especially the center light olive green band are all reminiscent of an ancient dyeing tradition.
