Description:

Chodor Chuval, Khiva Region of Central Asia, 19th C., 3'7'' x 2'6'' (109 x 76 cm). Weight: 4 lbs. Private East Coast collection. A ''rose'' Chodor weaving from Central Asia, featuring a distinctive palette found in only a small group of weavings from this tribe. Aside from an unusual Ertman göl variant, the motifs in the elem (bottom end panel) are more commonly associated with trappings woven to decorate a camel in a wedding procession. It is difficult to say why they appear on a chuval, though it is possible this weaving was made for such a celebration. The light blue is a sulfonic indigo blue. The condition is clearly compromised, evidence of long-term use. Even so, it remains complete from side to side, with most of the border system—including the outer secondary border—still extant, and it is intact from top to bottom as well.
