Early/Mid 19th C. Man's Ceremonial Poncho, Aymara People, Pacajes, Department of La Paz, Bolivia. The 19th Century Pacajes Aymara were master spinners, weavers and dyers of alpaca wool. Since they controlled all of the alpaca herds of the northern Bolivian high plains, they had access to the finest alpaca fibers. Their textiles were coveted for their excellence in fine spinning. This piece demonstrates all of the masterful characteristics of the Pacajes Aymara textile arts, including a full array of natural dye colors in the striping and fringe work. Size: 39'' x 41'' (99 x 104 cm).
