Description:

Egyptian Assuit Dress, C. 1920s. Cotton and metal alloy. Size: 56'' x 54'' (142 x 137 cm). Crafted from black mesh adorned with an array of exquisite motifs, including human figures and camels, interspersed among the customary geometric forms. Assuit shawls and dresses, also known as Tulle-bi-telli, take their name from the northern Egyptian city of Assuit, where this remarkable tradition originated. The production of Assuit garments and shawls was pioneered by the Coptic Christian minority of Egypt. Initially created as decorative elements for Egyptian bridal attire, Assuit textiles gained popularity in the West during the 19th-century Egyptian revival period. The Assuit technique involves the meticulous marriage of cotton or linen mesh with small strips of metal alloy. These metal strips are carefully applied by hand to create intricate patterns and designs. It's important to note that an alloy is used instead of pure silver, as silver would darken with age, making cleaning impractical. The result is a textile with an openwork mesh that possesses remarkable elasticity, allowing it to drape gracefully. Assuit textiles have had a significant cultural impact, featuring prominently in Hollywood productions such as the 1934 epic film "Cleopatra" directed by Cecil B. DeMille. They were also embraced by the flapper fashion of the 1920s. Today, Assuit dresses and shawls continue to be cherished as both works of art and cultural treasures, representing the enduring legacy of Egyptian craftsmanship and design.
