Eve Peri (1897-1966) was a versatile abstract fiber collage artist known for her embroidered compositions and paintings. Born in Bangor, Maine, she learned textile techniques from her family and later traveled the world gathering materials for her work. Living in New York, Mexico, and Philadelphia, with stints in Europe, she collaborated with her second husband, painter Alfonso Umana Mendez, on hand-woven fabrics sold in New York under the name Peri-Umana. Influenced by Surrealist artists like Jean Arp and Joan Miro, as well as Henri Matisse, her compositions feature rich colors and organic forms. Peri's work is included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
