Description:

Fine Algerian Three-Panel Curtain, 18th C. Silk embroidery on linen. Size: 9'2'' x 3'10'' (279 x 117 cm), offers a glimpse into the rich textile traditions of Algeria. Comprised of three narrow embroidered panels seamlessly sewn together, it forms an exquisite and functional curtain. The curtain's base is a finely woven linen, nearly enveloped by a lavish display of dense polychromatic silk floss embroidery. The intricate embroidery work features abstract floral motifs that create a captivating and vibrant design. What is now Algeria was once a part of the vast Ottoman Empire for many centuries, and this historical connection is reflected in the embroidery style of urban Algerian textiles. The influence of Ottoman design is evident in the delicate floral patterns and intricate embroidery techniques. These textiles, crafted by skilled professional embroiderers, are highly recognizable for their use of black silk outlines, which enclose areas adorned primarily with brick stitch and some satin stitch. The color palette is rich, predominantly featuring shades of red, blue, and purple.
