Description:

Fine Jaipur School Rajput Miniature Painting of a Noblewoman, Inscribed Poetic Verse, Late 18th-Early 19th C. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, with floral-decorated borders and Devanagari cartouche above. The painting depicts an elegantly dressed noblewoman or heroine (nayika) standing alone in a nocturnal riverside landscape. She wears a saffron-gold patterned jama with transparent white odhani and jewelry, rendered in the refined linear manner associated with late Rajput court ateliers. The atmospheric darkened sky, pale riverbank, sparse flowering shrubs, and delicately painted trees suggest a poetic or lyrical context, possibly from a Ragamala, Baramasa, or nayika classification series. Devanagari inscription, approximate translation: "Her lotus-like face shines with beauty and charm… adorned in graceful attire… standing absorbed in longing and love… her youthful elegance captivates the heart…" Size: 11.75'' x 8.5'', 30 x 22 cm (image ); 12.75'' x 9.25'', 32 x 23 cm (frame). Provenance: ex collection of Mr. P.O. Cheryan, Chevy Chase, MD.
