Description:

Moroccan Arid (Wall Hanging), Chefchaouen, Second Half 19th C. Silk embroidery on linen. Size: 88'' x 30'' (224 x 76 cm). This Moroccan arid, or wall hanging, hails from Chefchaouen, a small town in northern Morocco, and dates back to the second half of the 19th century. Chefchaouen embroideries are highly sought after and hold a special place among Moroccan urban embroideries. Chefchaouen's unique embroidery traditions are deeply rooted in its history. Established in the early 16th century, the town welcomed a significant number of Andalusian refugees, both Muslim and Jewish, who brought their cultural influences, including textile techniques and designs, from 15th-century Hispano-Moresque textiles. Arid forms, like this wall hanging, are the hallmark of Chefchaouen embroidery, although they serve various functions beyond wall decoration. They are also used as bedding frontals and furniture covers during festive and ceremonial occasions. The design of this piece is meticulously organized into two long embroidered areas along the shorter edges, featuring squares, medallions, cartouches, and other geometric elements. Within these shapes, one can find further geometrics as well as abstracted floral motifs. Chefchaouen embroideries stand out in the realm of Moroccan urban embroidery due to their distinct design. Thick uncoiled silk floss is used, and the embroidery work is executed in loop plaited stitch. These elements combine to create a lush and sumptuous appearance that is characteristic of Chefchaouen embroidery.
