Genevieve Seille (French, b. 1951) "Anthologie de Guerre 5," 1989, ink and collage on paper. Janet Fleisher Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. Size: 27'' x 31'', 69 x 79 cm (sheet); 31'' x 34'', 79 x 86 cm (frame). Provenance: The Robert L. Pfannebecker Collection. Artist Biography: Genevieve Seille studied Fine Arts at Wolverhampton Polytechnic in England, where she lived for 20 years. She works on collage, writing as well as painting. She currently lives and works in the South West of France. In Genevieve Seille's plastic work, the word reigns supreme. Object of fascination, only its visual appearance counts and becomes an aesthetic entity. This infatuation with the formal appeal of the word dates back to the artist's early childhood, where she reveled in the sound of the quill soaked in the inkwell and then its progress on paper. Awakening sensitivity, copying lines, words, letters then gives him immense pleasure. It was in 1995 that Genevieve Seille took a new step by conceiving her own words, her "dense signs" which she incorporated into her work. Linearity and color mingle, giving his drawings a certain symmetry, a certain repetition. It leaves no room for emptiness. Everything is a pretext for filling, for "scribbling" as she likes to say, but a scribbling which always harmonizes at the end. In this mysterious area, full of somewhat chaotic improvisations, the mental fascinations and visual images of Genevieve Seille come to life. Monstrous creatures, invented anatomies and always the word come together and offer a new way of seeing, dizzying and fascinating. "We will lead into a world where human bodies can turn into birds, or fish, or even unlikely framed monsters." Collections: National Art Library, Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archives of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Florida. USA MacArthur Foundation, USA.
