Gerry Bergstein (American, b.1947) "Real Tears," 1982. Oil on canvas. Signed, titled and dated verso. Unframed. Provenance: The Artist; Allan Stone Gallery, New York. Size: 60'' x 72'', 152 x 183 cm (stetcher). GERRY BERGSTEIN (b. 1947, Bronx, NY) Gerry Bergstein's mixed media works contrast the the manic and the melancholic. Drawing upon a wide range of inspiration, from Brueghel to The Simpsons, Bergstein's compositions teem with cascading figures plucked from art history and his own life. Images of the artist's family and friends mingle with figures he's borrowed from the works of Jean-Leon Gerome, Rene Magritte, Max Beckmann, Vija Celmins, John Currin and Matt Groening, among others. Cate McQuaid of The Boston Globe wrote in a 2013 "As ever, Bergstein is trying to figure out the universe, and it's a massive, spinning, tricky place. He invokes great thinkers who have tackled life, the universe, art, and society, and suggests that nobody has quite put it all together yet." Bergstein was born in the Bronx in 1947. He received his BFA and MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and institutions, including the Danforth Museum, Framingahm, MA; Gallery Naga, Boston; Thomas Segal Gallery, Boston; the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA; Forum Gallery, New York; the Polk Museum of Art, Lakeland, FL; Galerie Bonnier, Geneva, Switzerland; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Bergstein is represented in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; and the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA. He has been the subject of reviews in The Boston Globe, ArtNews, Art in America, and Artforum. Bergstein has been on the faculty at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for over two decades.
