Malloy (1983-1987); Private Collection (Acquired in 1987). Hector Hyppolite emerged as the pioneer of the artistic renaissance in Haiti, garnering international acclaim. Following his initial success, he moved to a fine bourgeois household equipped with modern amenities like electricity and running water. "Self-Portrait with Family" (circa 1946) stands as a deeply autobiographical piece, capturing the essence of his domestic setting. The affluence of the painter's family radiates through the luxurious attire adorning his wife and daughters. Hyppolite's reverence for all women as embodiments of Erzulie, the Goddess of Love, is palpable through the opulent clothing and jewelry, reinforcing this spiritual connection. This significant and singular work is believed to be the artist's sole portrayal of his family, possibly inspired by a lost photograph.
