Description:

Vintage Hand Painted Herend Porcelain "Hungarians vs Austrians" Chess Set, circa 1930.
King is 3.5" and Pawn 2" high.

Exhibited/Published/Illustrated: Schachspiele Wandel Im Laufe Der Kunst Und Kulturgeschichte (Chess: Art History and Culture), page 90, plate 104. Staatliches Museum Fur Volkerkunde (now the Five Continents Museum), Munich, 1988.

These figures were created by Herend in 1897 and produced in limited editions until 1938. Reflecting a historic rivalry where the Hungarians view the Austrian nobility as primarily ribald characters, The Austrian King smokes a simple pipe, while the Queen wears a headscarf and holds her hands at her hips, insinuating they (and their people) are in an inebriated state, casually spending their time in leisure. While the dignified Hungarian King is pleasant and benevolent, with all the Hungarians in a cheerful, direct and ready to engage mood, yet projecting a gravitas regarding the battle about to ensue.
A Munich museum chess exhibition catalog is included with this set.
