Description:

Illuminated Persian Manuscript Codex, Ethical Text, Gold And Polychrome Headpiece, Indo-Persian, 18th/19th C. Size: 1'' x 6.5'' x 11'' (3 x 17 x 28 cm). A Indo-Persian manuscript codex, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, written in elegant nasta'liq script in black ink with red and blue rubrication on laid paper. The text is structured in a scholastic question and answer format (su'al/javab), indicative of an ethical, philosophical, or instructional treatise used in Persianate scholarly traditions. The manuscript opens with a illuminated headpiece (sarlawh) executed in gold and polychrome, featuring floral arabesques in a symmetrical composition characteristic of late Mughal and Qajar-influenced decorative arts. Subsequent folios contain dense text panels within ruled borders, accompanied by extensive marginal annotations in Persian, suggesting prolonged scholarly use. The content comprises moral and intellectual reflections, addressing themes such as the nature of knowledge, ethical conduct, and the distinction between worldly desire and higher purpose. A later poetic section reinforces these themes through classical Persian verse.
