Description:

John Evans (American, b. 1945) "Field with Fog, " 1991. Oil and pastel on paper, signed. Unframed. Provenance: The Artist; Allan Stone Gallery, New York. Size: 32'' x 43'', 81 x 109 cm. JOHN EVANS (b. 1945, Mount Vernon, NY) is a painter with a passion for the dramatic moments found in the changing moods of the landscape and a true emotional connection with his subject. Utilizing the same gestural "push-and-pull" of Abstract Expressionism, Evans conjures energetic and inventive views of New England scenery. With the spontaneous physicality of his brushwork and the abstract nature of his forms, Evans translates the drama he witnesses in nature into rich and evocative paintings. Evans' paintings are remarkable for the contrasts inherent in their combination of rugged paint handling and chromatic delicacy. His landscapes evoke breathtaking vistas with a delicious succulent paint surface. John Evans was born in 1945. He received an MFA from Boston University in 1975, where he studied under Philip Guston. Since then, Evans has exhibited in museums including the Bruce Museum, Greenwich; Squibb Art Museum, Princeton, NJ; the Fitchburg Museum, Fitchburg, MA; the Newport Art Museum, RI; and the New Art Center, Newton, MA; and at galleries across the US such as Allan Stone Gallery, Gallery Henoch, MB Modern, Hacket-Freedman Gallery, and Gerald Peters Gallery. John Evans' work is in many public collections including National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Museum, Washington, DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, TX; Decordova Museum, Lincoln, MA; Rose Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA; Boston Public Library, Boston, MA; and Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, AR.
