Description:

Jose Benitez Sanchez (Mexico, b. 1938) Huichol Thread Painting. Size: 21.5'' x 18'', 55 x 46 cm (stretcher); 23'' x 19'', 58 x 48 cm (frame). Jose Benitez Sanchez, known in the Huichol language as Yucauye Cucame, or "Silent Walker" was born in 1938 on a ranch called San Pablito, in Nayarit. His religious tradition and family ties link him to the Huichol sub-group of Wautüa (the community of San Sebastian Teponohuaztlan). To quote the Wixarika Research Center: "Sanchez came to be recognized as an undisputed master of original dramatic compositions, and his knowledge of the culture was respected by scores of other specialists in this medium by 1971. He remains unsurpassed in the fertility and inventiveness of his art over the long span of his still-evolving career." Provenance: The Estate of Mary Bert Gutman, Pennsylvania.
