Description:

Large Ceremonial Poncho, Dept. Cochabamba, Early 19th C. This Balandran is a large ceremonial poncho. Crafted with alpaca warp and weft and adorned with natural dyes. Traditionally worn by the mallku, chief of the tribe, this enormous poncho is a remarkable cultural artifact. Its design features a ground of ten indigo blue bands, bordering six multi-colored, striped bands. Two supplementary warp patterned bands run down the middle and the edge of the poncho, placing it distinctly in the mountain region of Cochabamba. Notably, three narrow bands of reverse spun yarns at the sides, known as lloq'e, serve a shamanistic purpose, protecting the wearer from malevolent spirits. Completing this masterpiece is a multi-colored, three-inch fringe strip, intricately woven separately and skillfully sewn around the entire edge of the poncho. This Balandran stands as one of the best indigenous pieces to emerge from the Cochabamba region. Its excellent condition further underscores its significance as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the indigenous people. Size: 2'7'' x 5'10'' (79 x 178 cm).
