Description:

Milton O. Jews (American, b. 1932) Group of Ten Folk Art Canes. Carved wood with brass and glass. Ranging in size from: 33.75" (86 cm) to 44.25" (112 cm). MILTON O. JEWS was a self-taught, African- American master wood carver known for his canes and walking sticks. He wanted his art to "come alive," highlighting the flash and style of those who carried them. In Mr. Jews' words, the sticks were meant more for carrying than for walking. Carrying a stick became an act of performance, a public proclamation of one's identity. A cane was a declaration that offered carved clues to the sensibilities of the owner. "It's how you expressed yourself," Mr. Jews once reflected. "The stick just sets it off. You was considered dressed then."
