Description:

Moroccan Tetouan Mirror Cover, 19th C. Silk. 19'2'' x 1'10'' (584 x 56 cm). Specifically crafted for use during weddings and celebrations, these mirror covers, known as "tenifa," serve the dual purpose of adorning mirrors and warding off the evil eye. The creation of this mirror cover involves a remarkable process where freehand drawings are directly applied to the fabric. The handwork is executed using silk threads in satin stitch and double darning stitch, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. The color palette chosen for this piece is polychromatic, characterized by warm, vibrant, and robust hues. The saturated yellow satin ground provides a striking backdrop for the motifs, which include summer florals, serrated leaves, and geometric shapes. Adding to its beauty and elegance, the mirror cover is adorned with a gold tape border, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. The history of Tetouan and its embroidery traditions is closely tied to the migration of communities from Spain, Algeria, and the Ottoman Empire. In 1492, the expulsion of the Jewish and Muslim populations from Spain led many to settle in Morocco, bringing their artistic heritage with them. Tetouan, established during this period, absorbed various cultural influences, resulting in embroidery styles that blend elements of Hispano-Moresque, Algerian, and Ottoman aesthetics.
