Description:

Nuna Bird Mask, Burkina Faso. Carved wood, indigenous and imported pigment, fiber, metal. Size: 19'' x 64'' x 10'' (48 x 161 x 25 cm). Wheelock inventory #814, Published in Land of the Flying Masks, plate 48. Ex Peter and Nancy Mickelson. The small bird on the left wing is a restoration. Although popularly known as "butterfly masks" such masks more correctly related to birds. Tom Wheelock felt that the most likely reference were night hawks (aka nightjars) a common, nocturnal raptor that hunters would be intimately familiar with as they rest well-camouflaged on the ground during the day and, when disturbed, flush soundlessly from the path and fly away like a flake of wind-blown ash in the wind- an experience some find spooky. According to Wheelock "this mask may have been worn at an off-vertical angle, as the vertically striped volume below the face is an open cylinder through which the masquerader could have peered."
