Description:

Quechua Men's Uncu Ceremonial Tunic, Toropalca, Dept. of Potosi, 19th C. Size: 3'4'' x 2'11'' (102 x 89 cm). Alpaca warp and weft with natural dyes. Worn by the kuracas, chiefs, of the tribe. Textiles of this region were heavily influenced by the Inca mitmac, colonists, who were brought to Bolivia in the 15th century. The enormous size of the garment would have covered almost the entire body. The tunic is one piece, the neck slit woven in by discontinuous wefts and reinforced with hand sewn crewel stitches. The side seams are figure-eight stitch. The yarn is exquisitely hand-spun, dyed, and evenly woven. The alpaca yarn has a lustrous sheen. The jet-black center ground, pampa, is achieved using the leaves of the Algaroba tree, while the deep red side pampas are achieved using cochineal, (a dried beetle that thrives on the opuntia cactus). Dyed over brown yarn. Consigned by a major figure who has held these in collection since acquiring them in the field circa 1979.
