Description:

Rare and Fine Pre-Columbian Taino (1000-1500 CE) Duho. Lignum vitae wood carved ceremonial cohoba stool or platter. Featuring a human like face on a zoomorphic body. The brow forms a bird head with a snake in its beak, a traditional Mesoamerican reference to Quetzalcoatl and the bird/snake myth. The face features eye and mouth surrounds, a typical Taino design element. The design grouping just below the head is a combination of interlocking bird heads. The tail is carved with a series of circles, suggesting a crocodile or iguana's tail. Another "hidden" spirit face if formed by the hip roundels for eyes and the tail as a long nose. Provenance: Private Collection; purchased 1973 from Thomas Villanova, Miami, FL; ex John Fulling Collection, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Size: 40.5'' x 13'' x 7.3'' (103 x 33 x 19 cm).
