Rare Randolph Caldecott Inscribed 1879 Picture Book. Published by George Routledge & Son, London. Rare Inscribed 1879 edition of R. Caldecott's Picture Book Containing the Diverting History of John Gilpin - the House That Jack Built - the Babes in the Woods and an Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog. Inscription reads: " J. B. Seamen from Randolph Caldecott 1 May 1880"; A letter and note are included. The note reads: "David Johnson With Love & Best Wishes from Mr. & Mrs. Seaman, Kyrenia (Cyprus) 29/2/48"; the letter reads: "Sunday. Dear Mrs. Johnson I have been so wanting to give your precious little David something for his journey - such a long exciting one as it will be! but could think of nothing available till I remembered one or two children's books we still have - we send these here - with the hope they may amuse him for a little. The f..all "Nursery Stories" is ... worth heeping, once read - but the Caldecott has a literary value, having his own signature, & he was a great friend of my husband's uncle. A warm kiss I blow to David! & With our sincerest regards, & wishes for a safe & happy journey to you all / Yours sincerely Mrs. Seaman". Provenance: Private estate collection.
