Description:

Safavid-Mughal Illuminated Manuscript Folio, Persia Or Northern Indian, Late 17th-Early 18th C. Ink and opaque watercolor on paper. Sizes: 13.25'' x 7.5'', 34 x 19 cm (sheet). The recto features a floral sarlawh (illuminated headpiece) in cobalt blue, red, and gold with scrolling arabesques and stylized blossoms, above a central cartouche inscribed in red nasta'liq script. Below, a block of black nasta'liq text presents a literary or poetic passage, likely from a classical Persian manuscript or anthology. The cartouche reads approximately "Firdaus-i arsh barin" (The paradise of the exalted heavens), suggesting a poetic or metaphysical theme. The main text appears to be Persian literary prose or verse, consistent with manuscript production of the Safavid–Qajar transitional period. Rough Translation: "It has been said that among people of understanding and refinement, the one who is mindful in conduct and aware in speech attains a station of dignity and esteem. And one who walks the path of wisdom and restraint, and keeps company with the virtuous, will find his condition improved and his fortune elevated. But the one who turns toward heedlessness and base desire, and follows the counsel of the ignorant, falls into regret and misfortune. Thus the discerning person chooses companionship with the wise, and through this, secures honor in both worlds and peace in the order of existence".
