Description:

Saryk Chuval, Central Asia, Early 19th C., 4'0'' x 2'8'' (122 x 81 cm). Weight: 3 lbs. Private East Coast collection. An enigmatic Saryk chuval. From a distance, the piece initially suggests an Ersari weaving of the middle Amu Darya region. Closer examination, however, confirms a Saryk attribution, indicated by the symmetric knotting, the use of white cotton in the göls, and the characteristic secondary borders composed of colorful triangular motifs framing the primary border. The red ground approximates a middle Amu Darya shade rather than the deeper tones typical of Merv Oasis weavings. If originating from the middle Amu Darya region, this example likely predates most Saryk chuvals on the market, as the group began leaving that area circa 1780 and did not fully settle in Merv until the early 19th century. The orange accent is also atypical for Merv, and two reds are employed—one for the göls, the other for the ground—further distinguishing this weaving. The design is spaciously composed. Condition is fair: the sides are partially missing, with erosion into the border system and minor wear in the field. Despite these losses, the piece remains an instructive and visually compelling example of early Saryk weaving.
