Description:

Saryk Trapping, Central Asia, 19th C., 1'3'' x 3'10'' (38 x 117 cm). Weight: 2 lbs. Private East Coast collection. A wedding trapping made to adorn a camel bearing a young bride to her new husband's home. The design format is classic for weavings made for this purpose: the five complete niches appear to represent the kedjebe itself—the pyramid-shaped, rounded wooden litter in which the bride remained sequestered until reaching her husband's encampment. The central motif, repeated five times, is unusual, featuring a chocolate-to-purple ground within each diamond-shaped göl – a color suggesting a Pendeh region provenance – each enclosing a rare cruciform motif seen elsewhere in Turkmen weavings—rugs, mats, chuvals, and torbas—as a minor or secondary göl. The borders are classic for the type and appear to have been used exclusively on Saryk trappings of this specific form and function. The condition is flawless, though there are minor signs of use, including the soft patina characteristic of an older wool weaving that has seen careful service.
