Description:

Taino (c. 1000-1500 CE) Bat Man . The turned up, triangulate nose and large cadaverous eyes are known symbolic references to the bat. The most common bat represented in Taino art is the fruit bat. The idol likely references the god of the dead, Maquetaurie Guayaba. Bats were common representatives of the deceased and in most Pre-Columbian lore they are the reincarnation of the dead. They are closely associated with shamans as mediators between the living (shaman) and deceased. On reverse, the shoulders affirm the bat association carved to represent ξa secondary bat-like face. Made of a metamorphic stone, probably a solidified sandstone. Alexander Rood collection 1945-1990. Sold to Alfredo Carrada in 1990. Currently Carrada collection. Size: 11.5'' x 6.5'' x 7'' (29 x 17 x 18 cm).
