Description:

Tekke Small Rug or Mat, Central Asia, Early/Mid-19th C., 2'5'' x 2'7'' (74 x 79 cm). Weight: 2 lbs. Private East Coast collection. A diminutive Tekke weaving, possibly intended as a mat upon which a bride might be seated inside the wooden litter mounted on a camel's back during a marriage ceremony, or perhaps used by a tribal or family elder when greeting others of equal or greater stature. The saturated dyes, clarity of design, and unusual elements visible in both the upper and lower end panels are noteworthy, as is the apparent use of differing motifs in the primary borders at either end. The side-border motifs, while reminiscent of classic elements found in many Tekke rugs and mats, are rendered with uncommon variations; the way their centers are drawn departs noticeably from what we normally encounter. Although the principal field element follows the classic ''small göl'' format, the göls appear larger than expected, a visual effect created by the modest size of the mat itself. Compared with many weavings of this type, even in its fragmentary state the overall dimensions are small while the field design remains comparatively expansive. Though incomplete, this weaving appears to be an earlier example than those typically encountered in the marketplace—an intriguing piece of the puzzle for anyone interested in the long history of weaving among the Tekke Turkmen of Central Asia.
