Description:

Tekke Turkmen Mafrash, Central Asia, 19th C., 1'0'' x 2'4'' (30 x 71 cm). Weight: 1 lb. Private East Coast collection. The border system here suggests an example older than usual. The primary border is unusually framed by two different secondary, or minor, borders. The outer secondary border at first appears to be a standard flower-head motif, but the interior design, rendered in red, forms something altogether different—these are not white flower heads. Tastefully embellished with pinkish-red silk highlights, the weaving nonetheless appears older than others with similar coloring. Though the design itself is common, it must have carried special significance, as it is known as an aina göl pattern—aina translating to ''mirror, '' a tool of seers or shamans in ancient Central Asian religious practice. Slit vertically near the center and rejoined, remarkably few knots are missing along the length of the cut; the design remains virtually undisturbed to the eye. There are some additional minor condition issues, mostly concentrated at the top end, but elsewhere a nearly full, velvet-like pile remains extant.
