Description:

Chodor Engsi or Door Rug, Central Asia, 19th C., 4'0'' x 4'11'' (122 x 150 cm). Weight: 5 lbs. Private East Coast collection. At first glance, many will mistake this engsi, or door rug, for a Yomut weaving. The palette, however, immediately sets it apart from typical Yomut examples, as does the unusual detailing inserted into the running dog border—a very different and highly uncommon treatment. And of course the knotting – asymmetric knot open to the right – is a typical structural characteristic of Chodor weaving. Particularly interesting is the diagonal orientation of the primary elements within the running dog border. On both the vertical sides and the horizontal bands, these motifs alternate in direction, imparting a sense of dynamic tension and movement as they frame the overall composition. The staggered vertical rows of trees in the elems, or bottom end panels, are deliberately offset, further contributing to this visual energy. The deep aubergine ground of the compartmented field is accented by dark blue motifs typical of engsis. The rug remains complete from side to side and from top to bottom, though minor erosion is evident, along with some wear in the field.
