Description:

Saryk Chuval, Merv Oasis of Central Asia, 19th C., 4'6'' x 2'7'' (137 x 79 cm). Weight: 4 lbs. Provenance: Ex. James Allen. Private East Coast collection. Remarkably complete from side to side (though the original selvedges are no longer extant) and from top to bottom, this Saryk chuval features a symmetric knot and a palette distinctive of Merv Oasis weaving. The clear red ground color—a luminous scarlet, expertly dyed—is characteristic of the region, as is the orange-red hue seen elsewhere in the composition. The secondary borders framing the kotchanak-designed primary border are composed of multicolored triangular forms, again a distinctive Saryk trait. The weaver's attention to detail is evident throughout, particularly in the flower-like motifs of the lower end panel. Notably, each horizontal row of primary göls within the field differs from the next, receding in size from the larger examples at the top to smaller ones along the bottom row—an intentional illusion of depth for which master Turkmen weavers are well known. Virtually complete from side to side and from top to bottom, the overall condition is good.
