Description:

Chodor Rug, Central Asia, 19th C., 4'0'' x 5'8'' (122 x 173 cm). Weight: 7 lbs. Provenance: Hans Elmby, published Elmby, Ensi and Turkmen Rugs, #4, p18, plate 39. Private East Coast collection. Few rugs made by any of the Turkmen groups are of this size. They typically produced either larger main carpets or smaller mats, thought to have been made to seat a family elder or a young bride during the wedding procession. The motif in the ground of this rug is unusual to see as the sole, dominant element, being more often encountered as a tertiary field device or, occasionally, as a primary border design. The primary border of repeating ashiks is also rarely, if ever, seen, framed here by what must once have been two very simple minor borders, though the outer border on both sides is no longer extant. The tree-designed elems at either end might suggest to some that this is a door rug, as engsis are traditionally finished in this manner. The palette is typical for the Chodor, as is the weave, which apparently includes some cotton wefts—a feature associated with Chodor weaving from the Khiva region.
