Description:

Yomut Group Rug, (possibly Eagle Group?), Central Asia, 19th C., 5'4'' x 9'2'' (163 x 279 cm). Weight: 11 lbs. Private East Coast collection. A Yomut group rug woven with an asymmetric knot open to the left, this piece presents an intriguing challenge of interpretation. Finely executed and marked by atypical design features, it may at first appear to be a damaged example of relatively recent date—an impression reinforced by the diagonal orientation of the primary kepse göls, defined in part by their coloration. Closer examination, however, reveals a range of colorful details that are both distinctive and compelling. Of particular note are the diagonal lines set against the white ground of the primary border, an uncommon treatment of an otherwise familiar motif. The running dog borders at both the upper and lower ends are confidently rendered, with carefully articulated eyes in each animal or bird head. An unexpected design element in the upper left corner further distinguishes the composition. The elems at both ends are vividly colored and unusually conceived, as are the secondary borders. Vestiges of what appears to have been a final border survive at the lower end, where a barber-pole design remains clearly visible along the sides of the bottom panel. Despite its strong individuality and visual appeal, the question of attribution remains unresolved, presenting a challenge even for experienced students of Turkmen weaving.
