Description:

Chodor Rug Fragment, Central Asia, 19th C., 3'11'' x 4'1'' (119 x 124 cm). Weight: 5 lbs. Private East Coast collection. An unusual rug fragment securely attributable to the Chodor, though hardly typical in any respect other than palette. The minor borders are highly unconventional, framing a sparsely conceived primary border composed of simple kotchanak (fertility) motifs. It is rare to encounter this particular variant of a gölli-göl primary medallion paired with an equally uncommon gorbaghe göl secondary motif. Nearly complete from side to side—though the original selvedge wrapping is no longer extant—the original length of the rug remains uncertain. The palette, however, is notable, especially the deeply saturated colors of the primary göls, including an unusually clear yet true light orange-red, set against deep crimson and a richly saturated dark indigo blue. The extent of the design at the upper end is difficult to determine due to severe erosion. It may once have featured a large kotchanak device, with so-called ram's-horn extensions now surviving only near the border system, where they appear more like oversized animal or dragon heads, complete with eyes (see detail). An atypically designed Chodor rug fragment of genuine historical interest to any serious student of the art.
