Description:

Chodor Turkmen Bag Face, 19th C., 1'7'' x 1'3'' (48 x 38 cm). Weight: 1 lb. Private East Coast collection. Probably woven by a Chodor tribal group, the design—ostensibly a Turkmen kotchanak, or fertility symbol—appears to be a variation, possibly adapted from elsewhere. Seldom, if ever, seen on carpets or large chuvals, it more commonly appears on smaller weavings, such as a khorjin or donkey bag face, as in this example. Although the tribe undoubtedly produced such bags throughout Central Asia—from northern Persia eastward to the Khiva Khanate—most were used extensively and eventually destroyed or damaged. Few were ever sold or have surfaced on the marketplace, and as a result they have often been overlooked by collectors. This example survives in relatively good condition, though understandably not without signs of use. The top end shows some erosion, with minor loss to the design, while the bottom end remains intact. Only traces of the original side selvedges are preserved.
