Description:

Ersari Chuval, Central Asia, 19th C., 2'8'' x 4'4'' (81 x 132 cm). Weight: 3 lbs. Private East Coast collection. From the middle Amu Darya region and woven with an asymmetric knot open to the left, this piece is most likely attributable to the Ersari. It was probably woven in a traditional tribal context rather than produced in a sedentary urban or semi-urban environment. Notably, however, the primary border of repeating flowerheads follows a so-called ''Beshir'' pattern more commonly associated with sedentary workshop production. Aside from this feature, no other motifs suggest anything other than a tribal origin. The primary göls are notably tall, yet the secondary chemche göls are of comparable scale; at first glance, neither dominates the composition, allowing the eye to move evenly between the two. The selective use of white in four of the nine primary göls introduces a subtle sense of order and symmetry that further structures the field. The motifs used in the top end finish are atypical, while those in the lower elem panel are more commonly associated with silk embroidery. The barber-pole striping applied to the tree forms is especially eye-catching, resulting in a lively and somewhat dazzling composition. Clearly used but largely undamaged, the piece remains virtually complete. Minor erosion along the sides has resulted in the loss of a narrow border and the side selvedges, though from top to bottom very little is missing. One visible repair is present in the lower elem panel; otherwise, the weaving appears to be in original condition.
