Description:

Ersari ''Engsi'' or Door Rug, Central Asia, 19th C., 4'2'' x 6'3'' (127 x 191 cm). Weight: 7 lbs. Provenance: Ex. David Rubin. Private East Coast collection. The compartmented field presents a notable variation in its candelabra-like elements: at the upper end of each compartment, the forms are capped with a ram's-horn motif rather than continuing the opposed animal (or bird?) heads, each with a white crest on top, seen elsewhere in the design. This substitution appears intentional and points to a conscious engagement with older symbolic vocabulary rather than simple repetition. The central panel naturally suggests a ''Beshir'' association, given its origin in the middle Amu Darya region. This area supported a dense concentration of Ersari groups whose weavings reflect both settled oasis life and pastoral traditions along the margins of economically active villages, producing a visual language that resonates through both types. The primary border is a classic, with the spindly trees in the central panel recalling a Saryk-like aesthetic The motifs employed in the lower elem panels further reinforce this sense of continuity, drawing upon design elements with deep roots in Central Asia and the broader Turkic weaving tradition. Related forms appear in early weavings ranging from Anatolia in the west to present-day Uzbekistan in the east, underscoring the longevity and wide transmission of this shared visual vocabulary. Woven with an asymmetric knot open to the left, it recalls an historically important relationship with the Salor. Virtually complete, with original selvedges visible on both sides (though missing in places) and the full design preserved at both ends, this rug clearly led a long working life, likely in both Eastern and Western settings. Overall condition is relatively intact, with traces of the final secondary barber-pole border system still present at both the top and bottom.
