Description:

Indian Miniature Painting of Snake Charmers Taming Cobras, Jaipur, Late 18th-Early 19th C. Together with another painting. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, depicting a youthful ascetic snake-charmer seated amid a rocky landscape piping to hooded cobras, accompanied by a musician playing a pungi flute. Additional serpents emerge from the surrounding terrain and trees, emphasizing the theme of mastery over dangerous natural forces. Executed in a refined late Rajput manner with delicate facial modeling, pale atmospheric washes, and characteristic Jaipur palette of coral pinks, celadon greens, and powdered blues. The painting is mounted within an elaborate gold diaper border with floral reserve motifs and an inscribed upper cartouche in Devanagari script mentioning Jaipur and likely recording a patron or merchant donor invocation. The inscription appears devotional and dedicatory rather than narrative. Size: 11.75'' x 8.5'', 30 x 22 cm (image ); 12.75'' x 9.25'', 32 x 23 cm (frame). Provenance: ex collection of Mr. P.O. Cheryan, Chevy Chase, MD.
