Jean Effel, a French caricaturist, designed these figures during World War II. Effel's designs were modeled by Jean and Louise Matisse, son and daughter-in-law of the painter Henri Matisse. Ceramic artist Claude Renoir (son of the impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir) fired the figures in the kiln his father built at the family home in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Jean, Claude's brother and a filmmaker, would also make use of the family kiln, creating a body of work some of which was exhibited in 2018 at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

The bear with crown and scepter, the tip of which opens into one hand, is the King. The Queen is a duck with a pointy hat. the Bishop a monkey with a doll in his arms, the Knights and the Pawns are little rabbits. Queen and King figures are signed by Effel on the underside.

Jean Effel (Francois Lejeune) coined an artist's surname for himself from the pronunciation of his initials F of Francois as "Eff" and L of Lejeune as "el" thereby making Effel. A successful and celebrated caricaturist and satirist, Effel's work appeared in magazines and book-form publications. Effel was a rare illustrator who managed to create for both children and adults, addressing wide ranging topics from animal consciousness, modernized fairy tales on the making of the world, to expressions of freedom that expose and vanquish authoritarianism.
