Description:

Yomut Group Flat Woven Ok Bosh, Central Asia, 19th C., 2'2'' x 1'11'' (66 x 58 cm). Weight: 1 lb. Private East Coast collection. A visually dynamic flat weave from Central Asia, attributed to the Yomut. The design in white is executed in cotton, while the remainder of the bag is woven in wool. The scalloped end indicates that it was an okbosh, traditionally used to cover the strut poles of a yurt during transport to a new grazing ground. The palette is characteristic of Yomut work, featuring madder red, two blues—including a striking teal blue-green—and a gold tone seemingly unique to this group. The ground is dyed in the classic liver/aubergine shade, and the original selvedge at the top end remains intact. The bold zigzag design is immediately arresting. While examples of this type were once offered in Asian marketplaces, they are now rarely seen, as is the case with most weavings of this material.
