Description:

Chodor Turkmen Chuval, Central Asia, 19th C., 3'10'' x 2'7'' (117 x 79 cm). Weight: 3 lbs. Private East Coast collection. An unusual rose Chodor chuval, uncommonly featuring large-format chuval göls paired with small-göl secondary motifs. The distinctive rose-red color that defines this group is used liberally throughout the bag face—in the field, the borders, and in some of the diagonal rows of ashiks alternating with white, undyed wool. The color saturation here exceeds what is typically encountered in other examples of the group: the rose red is clear and true in tone, rather than the slightly muddy hue sometimes seen in comparable weavings. Despite erosion along the sides, where portions of the border system have been compromised, the overall condition is surprisingly good, with no repairs or holes in the body of the weaving. The presence of complete ends—both top and bottom—is particularly unexpected in a large bag of this type, especially given the degree of border wear. The large format chuval göls are impressive and only rarely encountered in Chodor chuvals. While this design type is known, its scarcity may prompt speculation as to why so few weavings with this motif have survived intact. The sheer scale of the göls is compelling, inviting comparison with similarly conceived bags from other Turkmen weaving groups.
